The area of Sfax is known for its entrepreneurship, economic dynamism and agricultural and energy production. It constitutes the 2nd pole of activity in Tunisia after the capital Tunis.
The governorate of Sfax, which extends over 7008km², currently includes 16 delegations and 16 municipalities.
Its population, reaching 849.700 inhabitants, makes up 8.4% of the national population, thus, positioning it just after the governorate of Tunis in demographic terms.
Geography
It is bordered by the Mediterranean to the east, the governorate of Gabes to the south, the governorshate of Mahdia to the north and the governorates of Kairouan, Sidi Bouzid and Gafsa to the west. It also includes the archipelago of Kerkennah. Latitude: 34° 44 ′ North, Longitude 10° 46 ′ East 34.74.
Its privileged geographical position, its broad opening on the sea (with a seashore of about 235 kilometers), and its port give it an important role in the commercial exchanges at national and international levels.
Administratively, the governorate is divided into 16 municipalities, 16 delegations and 126 sub-delegations.
